Lower Your Liquor Liability Requirement

South Carolina requires venues serving alcohol after 5 p.m. to carry $1 million in liquor liability coverage. Starting January 1, 2026, the SC Department of Revenue lets licensees lower that limit by qualifying for mitigating factors:

  • Forensic digital ID scanning from midnight to 4 a.m.: $100,000 lower

  • Alcohol service ends by midnight: $250,000 lower

  • All servers complete SCDOR-approved server training: $100,000 lower

  • Alcohol is under 40% of total sales: $100,000 lower

  • 501(c)(3) nonprofit: $100,000 lower

  • Single special event: $500,000 lower (applied automatically)

Coverage can't go below $300,000 for permanent licenses ($150,000 for special events). Licensees submit their factors in MyDORWAY under "ABL Mitigating Factors."

How Legion helps: Our officers check every ID at the door and can run your forensic ID scanner through the midnight-to-4 a.m. window, so you qualify for the ID-scanning reduction. Ask about it when you request a quote.
